The news has finally arrived! After months of speculations and leaks topped up by coronavirus, Sony has announced the PS5 specs reveal event. The online event will be happening tomorrow, March 18, at 9 AM PT/ 12PM ET/4 PM GMT. It can be watched live on the PlayStation Blog. The session will be led by PS5 architect Mark Cerny delving on “PS5’s system architecture and how it will shape the future of games.”
The PS5 reveal event is happening a day after Microsoft’s unexpected Series X specs’ release. The much-awaited next-gen Xbox has the architecture of a custom AMD Zen 2 CPU with 8 cores @3.8GHz each. It is powered with a customized AMD RDNA 2 GPU with 12 teraflops and 52 compute units at 1.825GHz each.
Sony has been selective in revealing information. It has thrown light, very limited though, on the specs of next-gen PS5. Last year in October, Sony unveiled a few technology-related details like 7nm processors, ray-tracing support, 8K gaming, ultra-fast SSD storage, new controller, backward compatibility, and affordability. But they were sketchy. Hopefully, tomorrow’s session will give more inputs to ponder.
The above screengrab is a reminder of what Sony talked about last year on PS5. It is now time to revisit it. Tomorrow’s “deep dive” will be centered more around system architecture. Expect more specifics on the light blue topics.
The PlayStation fans will be expecting more than the architecture, specifications, and way forward. Fans would be looking forward to information on price and any inputs on games exclusive for the PS5 platform.
PlayStation Japan has confirmed that the PS5 presentation content was originally designed for GDC 2020. Set your expectations for more focus on hardware and architecture with a probability of some game teasers.
Tomorrow’s event will finally have more than a logo from the Sony camp. Time to set your reminders, citizens of the PlayStation nation! Stay Tuned!
