A concept render shared by tipster @MaxJmb has led people to speculate that the flagship brand is pushing itself to improve its ratings. The tweeted image shows “Water” text in the background. At the forefront, it has an image of a smartphone with a punch-hole camera setup on the top-left corner. The display takes after OnePlus 8 series phone. It gives an indication that the OnePlus 8 series is opting for water and dust resistance rating.
As of now, the tipster has not disclosed the IP rating- IP67, IP68, or something else. But it is assumed that it should be the latest one- IP68. The simple reason being that the latest iPhone and Samsung Galaxy S-series flagships are certified IP68.
The featured support is anticipated to come in the higher-end OnePlus Pro model but it is not clear whether OnePlus plans to extend to OnePlus 8 as well.
The news has not been officially confirmed but it does give rise to doubts whether OnePlus is ready to have official IP ratings for its phones? For all its models, OnePlus had opted out of the certification. The reason was the certification involved extra costs leading to price escalation at the consumer’s end.
It was during the launch of the OnePlus 7 series, the brand had showcased the water-resistance feature without warranty. It had categorically said that they were not going for IP67 ratings as it was a costly affair.
OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei had acknowledged the importance of IP ratings during the OnePlus 7 launch.
“We know that an IP rating would be the simplest way to prove our phone’s capability,” he wrote in the forum post, “But the certification doesn’t help us communicate our focus on your real experience, which is why we created this direct and relatable video to show you what our water-resistant quality can actually bring to you in your real life in a more powerful way,” remarked Carl Pei
But the times are about to change with the upcoming OnePlus 8 series if this piece of rumor turns out to be true.
