How To Reduce Call of Duty: Modern Warfare File Size on PC?

Call of Duty Modern Warfare is one of the most popular games. It is famous for its incredible graphics, but it comes at a cost, i.e., hard disk space. At the moment, Call of Duty Modern Warfare is around 250 GB in size.

In the current scenario, many people are shifting towards Solid State Drives (SSDs) instead of Mechanical Hard Drives (HDDs). The SSDs are many times faster than HDDs, and it means the load time for OS and other applications stored on the SSD are quite less compared to those on the HDD.

Why Not Use SSDs All the Time?

The blazing fast speed of SSDs combined with their low weight, and low power demand makes them the perfect storage device. As a result, you might want to get rid of your 2TB HDD and get a 2 TB SSD instead.

However, unless you are one of those people who require that kind of read and write speed, you would avoid a 2 TB SSD. The main reason is the price. You can get a 1 TB HDD for $30-$40 depending on the brand. If you go with a 1 TB SSD, you might need to spend over $100.

People try to compromise on speed and storage and tend to use HDDs for the storage of files that don’t frequently access and keep frequently used apps and data on an SSD.

Large Game Size: A Big Issue

Recently, the file size of games is increasing at a rapid pace. A decade ago, you would hardly find any game that is bigger than 10-15 GB. However, today games are getting more complex, and their size is increasing day by day.

One such game is Call of Duty Modern Warfare (2019). When the latest Call of Duty hit the market in late 2019, it was around 150 GB in size. Within a span of 2 years, the last one was a miserable fat update exceeding 256GB SSD space.

Most people prefer to keep their games on the SSD as they get huge benefits from the speed of these SSDs. You will notice that a majority of people tend to use a 240 or 250 GB SSD in their PCs.

Recently, this became a huge issue for many Call of Duty fans. The regular upgrades made it difficult for them to store the game on their SSDs.

Console players have option to reduce Call of Duty size

The size of Call of Duty Modern Warfare (2019) is also increasing on consoles, but they had a benefit. Console players of Call of Duty Modern Warfare have an option that allows them to download parts of Call of Duty that they intend to play. As a result, console owners were not facing major issues.

At the time when the PC version of CoD weighs around 240 GB, you will see that the PS4 and Xbox One versions can be reduced to under 200 GB. They were able to achieve this reduction in size by removing the Campaign segment of the game. Additionally, console players had the option to remove certain multiplayer options of the game as well.

Overall, the game size was more manageable on consoles than on the PC. The feature of giving control to manage Call of Duty: Modern Warfare file size on PC has been in demand for some time now. The devs have found some workarounds to handle the “256GB SSD no longer enough to hold and upgrade CoD: Modern Warfare on PC” issue.

Mode specific uninstall options for PC Modern Warfare owners available

A couple of days ago, Activision came up with a patch for PC players that allows them to remove unwanted segments of the game. As a result of this patch, you could reduce the size of your Call of Duty Modern Warfare (2019) installation on your PC from around an overwhelming 200 GB to 170 GB.

This patch, which itself is around 20 GB, helps you remove these segments of the game:

  • Campaign: 34.5 GB
  • Multiplayer: 42.1GB
  • Spec Ops: 37.8GB

If you don’t want to play a particular segment(s) on the game, you can remove it. You could also remove all three of them at the same time. However, removing all the three would leave you with the Call of Duty: Warzone mode, which is available as a stand-alone version and that too for free.

Production Director, Paul also confirms that Warzone is mandatory, “because that’s where all the shared data is stored for weapons/operators/etc. that are needed for all modes. The only warzone specific data that gets pulled along is the map and it’s not that much data compared to all the weapons and operators. In other words: you would not save much space at all by uninstalling Warzone but still needing all the data for MP.”

Activision has made a good move by allowing gamers to download the game mode they want to play. This update not only saves your hard disk space but also reduces the time and data consumed to download the game.

Paul Haile’s words will sound music to every PC owner, when he confirms – “yes you can choose what parts of MW you want during the initial install as well.
