Puella Magi Madoka Magica is one of those shows which reveal a grim story beneath its shiny veneer. Gen Urobuchi is recognized more for his gory storytelling which in fact is the antithesis of the magical girl genre. When Madoka Magica first debuted in 2010, much of its audience had come to the realization that the show is far from the dainty and “kawaii”.
2013’s Rebellion film was shortly followed by a claim stating that a sequel to the movie was in the works. Many fans were more than glad to wait for the prerequisite 2 years before the next one came out. However, no one had ever bargained for such a long hiatus of eight years.
Better late than never. In Puella Magi Madoka Magica anime’s 10th anniversary event, Studio Shaft the brains behind the show revealed the sequel to Madoka Magica The Movie Part 3: Rebellion. The new anime Puella Magi Madoka Magica Movie 4 will be titled Gekijōban Mahō Shōjo Madoka Magica: Walpurgis no Kaiten (Turning the Tide of Walpurgis). It has an interesting tagline- “Now, let’s continue the story.”
Puella Magi Madoka Magica Movie 4: Turning the Tide of Walpurgis. This does indicate a final showdown between the remnants of our previous characters going against the infamous Walpurgisnacht. It might also help resolve some fan theories while dispelling others.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica Movie 4 Trailer
On the 10th anniversary of the anime series, a short 30-second trailer was released alongside too, though calling it a trailer is a bit of a stretch.
The tagline is pretty succinct, “Now, let’s continue the story.”
The artwork released by the makers has the protagonist Madoka Kaname in her pink gear, oozing innocence as always. If you take your eyes off her and look sideways, the poster features cracked glass in the backdrop. There is a creepy hand reaching out to Madoka from the other side. Expect the movie to have promised twists and truns.

Madoka Magica: Walpurgis no Kaiten Story
I’m no stranger to the magical girl genre and over time the very few that I know anything about mostly painted its characters in an annoying perspective. Madoka Magica on the other hand is a breath of fresh air… ironic I should mention it. The writers made sure to show the effects and consequences the characters’ choices make, all the while depicting their job as risky and life-threatening.
Character development is impressive and often sensible. While Madoka Magica isn’t the only one in the series, it’s often more poignant when compared to the others. Betrayal and friendship are common themes that often recur while despair is given emphasis as the turning point in a Magical Girl’s life.
