Apple’s long-rumoured entry into the foldable phone market is looking increasingly ambitious. New leaks surrounding the iPhone Fold Ultra point to a premium titanium-and-aluminium design, a large inner display, 12GB of RAM and Apple’s next-generation A20 Pro chip.
The device is still unconfirmed by Apple, but the latest reports add weight to the idea that the company’s first foldable will not simply be a conventional iPhone with a folding screen. Instead, Apple appears to be positioning the iPhone Fold Ultra as an entirely new flagship category, potentially combining the portability of an iPhone with the screen space of a compact tablet.
The iPhone Fold Ultra is expected to use a book-style folding design rather than the clamshell format seen on phones such as the Galaxy Z Flip. Leaked dummy units and renders suggest a relatively wide body that opens horizontally into a much larger display.
Current reports point to a 5.5-inch outer screen and a roughly 7.8-inch internal OLED display. That would give the device a considerably larger workspace when unfolded, while keeping the outside display usable as a conventional smartphone.
The reported dimensions are particularly ambitious. The foldable could be only around 4.5mm thick when opened and roughly 9mm to 9.5mm when closed.
That slim profile would be one of the biggest differentiators for the iPhone Fold Ultra, but it also creates serious engineering challenges. Apple would need to fit two displays, a hinge, batteries, cameras and flagship silicon into a chassis that is thinner than many conventional smartphones.
Leaks suggest Apple could use titanium alongside aluminium in the chassis to balance rigidity and weight. The hinge is also expected to receive considerable attention, with previous reports pointing toward an approach designed to make the display crease far less noticeable than on many existing foldables.
iPhone Fold Ultra may use the A20 Pro chip and 12GB RAM
Performance could be another major selling point. Recent reports indicate the iPhone Fold Ultra may use Apple’s A20 Pro chip, potentially manufactured using TSMC’s 2nm process.
The A20 Pro is also expected to power the iPhone 18 Pro models, making the decision particularly significant. Rather than giving the foldable a modified or lower-tier processor, Apple could put its most powerful smartphone silicon inside the most expensive iPhone.
The 2nm manufacturing process is expected to improve both performance and efficiency compared with the current generation. Some reports have suggested gains of around 15% in performance and up to 30% in power efficiency, although those numbers remain estimates rather than Apple-confirmed specifications.
The latest leaks also point to 12GB of RAM. That amount would make sense for a device designed around multitasking and a much larger display.
A foldable iPhone could potentially keep multiple apps active, display two applications side by side and handle more demanding AI features. Extra memory would give iOS greater flexibility in managing those workloads.
A larger battery could solve one of Apple’s biggest foldable challenges
Battery life will be crucial for the iPhone Fold Ultra because a 7.8-inch internal display could consume considerably more power than the screen on a conventional iPhone.
Recent leaks have pointed toward a battery in the roughly 4,800mAh to 5,000mAh range, with one report suggesting two cells could combine for approximately 4,883mAh. The two-cell arrangement would be logical for a book-style foldable because the battery can be distributed between both halves of the device.
That would not necessarily make the iPhone Fold Ultra the battery-capacity leader among foldables. Instead, Apple could rely on the efficiency of its A20 Pro chip and tight hardware-software integration to stretch the available capacity.
For Apple, battery optimisation may matter more than simply chasing the largest possible number. A foldable with a huge screen that struggles to last through a full day would quickly undermine its premium positioning.
The camera system may be thinner than the Pro Max
Apple could make an unusual compromise with the iPhone Fold Ultra by using fewer rear cameras than its conventional Pro phones.
Current leaks point toward a dual-camera arrangement consisting of a main camera and an ultra-wide camera, potentially using 48MP sensors. A dedicated telephoto camera may be absent.
That would be a notable difference from the expected iPhone 18 Pro Max, which is likely to retain a more elaborate camera system.
The reason is straightforward: camera hardware takes up valuable internal space. A large telephoto module needs room for its optics, while the foldable chassis is already packed with a hinge and two battery sections.
For Apple, this could represent a conscious trade-off. The iPhone Fold Ultra may not be designed to beat the Pro Max in every camera specification. Its appeal would instead come from combining strong photography with a dramatically different form factor.
Touch ID could return on the iPhone Fold Ultra
One of the more interesting rumours concerns biometric authentication.
Several reports suggest Apple could abandon Face ID on the iPhone Fold Ultra and move Touch ID into the side power button. The reason is believed to be the difficulty of fitting the necessary Face ID components into an extremely thin foldable design.
If accurate, this would mark one of the biggest interface changes to an iPhone in years.
Apple has not used Touch ID as the primary authentication system on its flagship iPhones since moving to Face ID, so bringing it back on the foldable would be a notable compromise. It could also help Apple keep the inner screen cleaner and maximise the usable display area.
However, this remains firmly in the leak category. Apple has not confirmed the biometric system.
Why Apple is waiting until now to make a foldable
The iPhone Fold Ultra is arriving much later than the first generation of foldables from Samsung, Huawei, Google and other manufacturers. That delay could actually work in Apple’s favour.
Instead of competing to be first, Apple appears to be targeting the weaknesses that have affected foldables for years: visible creases, bulky designs, questionable durability and high power consumption.
Reports have repeatedly suggested that Apple wants a much less noticeable display crease and a relatively thin chassis.
That strategy fits Apple’s broader approach to new product categories. The company rarely needs to introduce a technology first. It can wait for manufacturing techniques to mature and then focus on turning the technology into a polished consumer product.
The iPhone Fold Ultra therefore matters beyond its own specifications. Apple entering the market could force Samsung, Google and other manufacturers to push harder on design, software and durability.
iPhone Fold Ultra launch could happen in September
The current expectation is that Apple will unveil the iPhone Fold Ultra during its September 2026 event, potentially alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.
There is still some uncertainty over availability. Manufacturing a completely new foldable design at Apple’s scale is considerably more complicated than producing another slab-style iPhone, so limited initial supply or a delayed retail launch remains possible.
Pricing is another major question. Current reports generally place the foldable in the vicinity of $2,000 or more, with some estimates reaching considerably higher.
That would make it substantially more expensive than the standard iPhone 18 lineup and firmly establish the iPhone Fold Ultra as an ultra-premium product.
What the leaks mean for iPhone buyers
For existing iPhone owners, the iPhone Fold Ultra may not be an obvious upgrade. Its appeal will depend heavily on whether users actually benefit from the larger internal screen.
The device could be particularly attractive to people who use their phones for:

- Reading and document work
- Watching video on a larger display
- Mobile gaming
- Productivity while travelling
- Replacing some tablet use

The leaks describe a phone built around premium materials, a tablet-sized internal display, substantial memory and next-generation silicon. If Apple can combine those elements with a thin chassis and an unobtrusive crease, it could deliver one of the most significant iPhone redesigns in years.
