Many OnePlus 7 series users are asking when will their devices get the latest Android 11 update. A couple of days ago, OnePlus began providing the Android 11 update for its OnePlus 8 series of devices. The upcoming OnePlus 8T will come with the latest version of the OS pre-installed.
OnePlus 8 series devices are still receiving the latest update from OnePlus in batches. It is the OnePlus 7 series users who wish to know when the update would go live on their phones.
OnePlus 7 Series Android 11 Release Date Delayed
If you are reading this post then I believe you are waiting for the Android 11 beta OnePlus 7. Well, there is not much good news in terms of timelines.
OnePlus, which always tries to keep up with the pace of Google when it comes to delivering the latest Android update, has done a magnificent job for its current range of devices.
The OxygenOS 11 is already live for download on the OnePlus 8 devices. However, the Chinese phone maker has not given any OTA on the OnePlus 7 series and OnePlus 6 series.
OnePlus Forum Moderator confirms 2021 for OnePlus Android 11
Without any official word on the update, a moderator on the OnePlus forum has given a clue on the timeline.
According to the moderator, OnePlus 7 devices will receive the Oxygen OS 11 update until 2021. However, he didn’t mention the exact timeline for these updates. Furthermore, the moderator only mentioned the OnePlus 7 series in the comment. However, he was quick to add that it is a speculated ETA only.
This has left OnePlus 6 series users wondering that their devices might need to wait even longer to get the Android 11 update. They are assuming that their devices are eligible for updates.
The statement from the moderator is not final, and we need to wait for confirmation from the official OnePlus sources. As a part of OnePlus’ timeline to provide an update for the OnePlus 8 devices, the company said it would provide an update to the OnePlus 8 before the launch of OnePlus 8T.
It is highly unlikely that OnePlus would wait two to three months before updating the previous generation of OnePlus devices. There is a possibility that OnePlus will offer an Android 11 update to OnePlus 7T and 7T Pro soon. We might see the Android 11 update for these devices by the end of 2020. Then, OnePlus might move over to OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro during the first quarter of 2021.
Updates As On 15th October
Contradicting the earlier statement of the moderator, Android Authority, has confirmed that the Android 11 update will roll out for the OnePlus 7 series in December. The models of the flagship series include OnePlus 7, OnePlus 7 Pro, OnePlus 7T, and OnePlus 7T Pro, according to the OnePlus spokesperson. Whereas Oxygen OS 11 for carrier devices, like the OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren Edition on T-Mobile, will be rolled out sometime later.
Do keep in mind that the OnePlus 7 and the OnePlus 7T series users will get stable updates at different intervals due to separate codebases.
It was expected with the launch of the OnePlus 8 series, there will be a fall in the price of the devices from the previous series. A lot of people might buy the OnePlus 7 devices, and OnePlus wouldn’t want to disappoint them. As a result, we might see the update on the OnePlus 7 series a lot sooner than expected.
Updates As On 27th December
The step motherly treatment treatment by OnePlus to OP 7 series has started people wondering whether it is more due to OEM’s strategy. Around 6 years ago, OP targeted 1 device/ year that has now moved on to a 2-3 devices/year strategy. Within a span of 12 months OnePlus has come up with OP 7T, OP 8 and almost OP 8T. However, OP 8 & OP 8T have got Oxygen OS 11 whereas OP 7T was supposed to get it in December 2020.
In a post published around 10 days ago, OEM’s HydrogenOS administrator announced the delay in the Android 11 rollout to the OnePlus 7 series. The devs are trying to find a solution to the “data decryption failure” bug in collaboration with Qualcomm. Since the news of the delay has come for China, the global version rollout has no dates. The details can be accessed on the OnePlus Chinese forum.
OnePlus 7T users feel that they have been harassed by the company even after they paid a premium price. Over a period of 12 months, they have found a pattern that is making them uncomfortable and angry!
- Irregular Security & patch updates
- Community app and social media team are no help in problem-solving
- Priority shifts to a new phone as it comes out with the explanation “It will be tough to bring all features to older phones“
Updates As On 3rd January 2021
There is some positive development on the Android 11 update for the OnePlus 7 & 7T devices. Released by OnePlus, it says:
OnePlus has also clarified about its schedule of rollout for different carriers.
If a loyal OP customer wants to experience Android 11, is he supposed to buy the OnePlus 8/8T? The frustration is justified, however, it is hard to ascertain when OnePlus would come up with the update. With the current updates, the earlier expected date of December is out of reach now.

OnePlus 7 and 7T started receiving Android 11 Open Beta 1 build after a couple of weeks OnePlus Nord received. But it was for China-based devices. After a pensive wait of 6 months, the global rollout of the much-awaited Android 11 Open Beta 1 for OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7T begins. If you want to take risk of installing a Beta build, here are the links.
Beta build can only work for unlocked and the non-carrier OnePlus 7/7T/7Pro/7T Pro variants. Download links for the OnePlus 7T/7T Pro have been taken off for the time being. There were reports of data wipe on installation.
Few prominent issues have started getting noticed by users who could not resist the download. Some are known bugs and few new ones have been reported. The common ones plaguing Android 11 updates are battery drain, performance issues with the gallery, and buggy Bluetooth audio.
One of the most prominent one is missing Always-on-Display (AOD) feature. It has left many heart broken.
I’m not going to go on about how terrible they are with updates but I saw the Android 11 hydrogen OS 11 beta for OnePlus 7 and always on display AOD is missing, only the normal ambient display is available. Why the hell? I said last year on a sub that it will only be added in a later update, after the official build has rolled out and I’m scared I might be right. After all we’re still waiting for optimized charging to come to the stable version a year after it’s announcement

On contacting OnePlus customer service, the only solace on broken AOD is that the issue will be fixed and come in the next stable release. OnePlus has acknowledged the issue and said:
“Always-On-Display feature is under internal test and will be released in subsequent versions. In this build, you can use the “Ambient Display” by picking up your phone or tapping the screen, it can be turned on in the Settings”

OnePlus 7T devices that got upgraded to Open Beta 1 are reporting slow Warp Charging issues. The sudden slow charging speed was never detected in the earlier OxygenOS 10. Users have tried the same setup with the company charger used earlier. But it has been observed that the charging speed has fallen to 2.5 amp. Source 1,2,3,4,5,6,7
Luckily a solution has been reported on the forum by one of the users. As per him, he gave the device a few complete charging cycles and the warp charging kicked in back to normal. Another workaround suggested on the community forum has been to tweak settings in the battery section of the device. Turn off the optimized charging option because it has been found to hit charging perfromance of battery.
Till the time OnePlus doesn’t acknowledge, continue with the above potential solutions!
