Racing video games aren’t mentioned that often when it comes to the best games ever. Despite their consistent quality, they are often overlooked in more “complex” and mainstream titles, and you will certainly never hear Drift Hunter in the same breath as giants like The Legend of Zelda, Metal Gang, or Madalin Stunt Cars. But that doesn’t mean they’re not worth playing. Which ones should you try? Here are the top 5 classic racing games of all time.

Sega Rally Championship

Sega Rally Championship manages to wow its players with its gameplay alone, which is not often the case for a game with less content. The content is really limited, with only three stages and a bonus stage for first place at the end of the third, and two main cars. It features arcade handling with beautifully laid out stages; fast-paced rally action with exciting overtakes and a challenging goal to qualify for the next stage.

The graphics in one of the best racing video games are very impressive when viewed at high speed – grass and rocks flit by in blurry waves. The game’s music is amazing and suits the racing action and fast-paced mood of the game, capturing a classic Sega soundtrack feel.

Sega Rally Championship is a great 1994 rally game that offers good racing, sounds, a good challenge, and plenty of well-made tracks. However, the lack of quantity is what hinders it from being perfect. Although it lacks depth, it is a good example of quality over quantity.

Need for Speed

No list of the best racing video games would be complete without the Need for Speed game. Need for Speed is one of the most iconic racing game series and it comes with tons of great games. The excitement is palpable when one hits the hard pedal of the world of chaos, control and spins into underground car culture.

Win races, ride your rep, then embark on more races, more customizations, and more cars. In the game, you will have access to the fastest sports cars from manufacturers such as Ferrari, McLaren, Lamborghini, Pagani, and many more.

You will show off your racing skills in multiple unique challenges. You can build your dream ride with an amazing array of cars and customizations.

Super Mario Kart

Super Mario Kart is one of the oldest auto racing game franchises and a favorite among players of all ages in the genre of racing video games. The most endearing about this title is that it remains difficult to master even today. And those who think otherwise have not taken Rainbow Road.

This is a video racing game of karts between the characters in the world of Super Mario. It is the first installment in the Mario Kart video game series. Each race is represented by an eight-character lineup from the Mario universe. Karts of different characters have different top speeds, acceleration, and handling.

With such tight tracks, drivers are encouraged to follow the ideal racing line to defeat their opponents. The game features various environmental obstacles, including Thwomps that fall, gophers that cling to your kart and need shaking off, lava pits, and deep water. Although, tracks with speed boost strips will allow you to stay in front of your competition.

Top Gear 2

In Top Gear 2 you race together with 19 other cars in full screen and you need to get at least 10th place to continue, below that is a race over. Cars can take damage, causing maximum speed to be reduced and encouraging players to use brakes or stop accelerating instead of crashing.

During the race, you have a fuel bar and your car’s status and none of them can be recharged. There are no pit stops on any track but all of them have a certain amount of laps where you will never run out of gas.

Shield needs to be preserved as much as possible as the more you hit, the more your maximum speed will be reduced and this can cost you first place, especially in the beginning. After each race, the player earns credits which can be spent on the engine, gearbox, tires, protection, and turbo.
