Sony has announced that 2024 Xperia phones will be unveiled on May 17. However, they haven’t revealed any specifics about these new devices yet. It’s being speculated that Sony is likely to introduce 2024 models in their existing Xperia series, namely Xperia 1 VI, Xperia 5 VI, and Xperia 10 VI.
Recent Xperia 1 VI leaks suggest that it will have larger camera modules compared to its predecessor, the Xperia 1 V. Additionally, the Xperia 1 VI is rumored to lose its 4K display and adopt a slightly more common aspect ratio. The passing of a SIM-free version through FCC certification, suggests a wide availability of the device.
We have come across intriguing information on Weibo that could assist us in forecasting Xperia 1 VI price.
Xperia 1 VI price leaks in Taiwan are tipped to be TWD 39,900, which is approximately $1,225 or €1,145. This price is slightly lower than the original price of the Xperia 1 V, which was TWD 41,990 ($1,290 / €1,205). However, it’s unclear if the Xperia 1 VI price reduction will be reflected in other markets or if it’s specific to Taiwan.
With this pricing, the Xperia 1 VI will compete in the same price bracket as Samsung’s top-tier Galaxy S24 Ultra, which started at $1,299.99 / €1,299.99. It remains to be seen if Sony’s new flagship will offer enough features and improvements to compete with other flagship phones from bigger brands.
A month ago, the Sony Xperia 1 VI price leaked on Weibo suggesting a price of HK$9,699 (approximately 183,000 yen) for the Hong Kong market. This aligned with the pricing of the previous Xperia 1 V in Hong Kong, which was HK$9,699 for the 256GB model and HK$10,499 for the 512GB model. This Sony Xperia 1 VI price leak also suggests that there may not be a drastic change in comparison to its predecessor.
The Sony Xperia launch event is scheduled for May 17th at 7 PM JST (3:30 PM IST), and only 100 people are invited to attend, according to the event page. While there are no live stream links available yet, more details are expected to be revealed in the coming weeks.
In the meantime, Sony has confirmed that new 2024 Xperia phones will feature a powerful chipset the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and it is likely that the flagship Xperia 1 VI will include.
Rumors indicate that the Xperia 1 VI will feature a wider and more traditional 19.5:9 aspect ratio, a departure from the 21:9 aspect ratio found in older models. The phone is also rumored to come with a 2K+ or Quad HD+ panel, which is a lower resolution compared to the 4K panel used in previous models.
In terms of design, the Xperia 1 VI is said to be wider and shorter than older models, measuring 161.9 x 74.5 x 8.4mm. It is also rumored to be 0.1mm thicker compared to its predecessor, the Xperia 1 V.
Regarding the camera setup, reports suggest that the Xperia 1 VI will feature a triple camera setup on the back, with all three rear camera sensors rumored to be 48MP Exmor T sensors. This setup is said to include a 48MP 1/2.7″ periscope telephoto sensor capable of 3x optical zoom and up to 6x zoom via sensor crop.
There are also rumors of the Xperia 10 VI being launched at the same event, but it’s uncertain if the Xperia 5 VI will be unveiled, as the Xperia 5 V was introduced only in September of the previous year.
