It has been 2 days since the launch of the Overwatch 2 Season 8 update and there are a considerable number of players getting frustrated with significant and persistent FPS drops along with lag issues. The gameplay has become impossible on PS5. Sometimes the game runs pretty smoothly and other times it’s completely unplayable. Players found the the issue popping up mostly when they were spawning or doing character selection but sometimes the frame drop was observed in battle too.

Notably, Blizzard developers have recognized the problem by including it in the ‘Current Issues‘ tab, signifying their acknowledgment and commitment to resolving the reported issues.

What is the Overwatch 2 frame drop issue?

The recent launch of Season 8, titled “Call of the Hunt,” in Overwatch 2 has introduced substantial changes to the game. Notable updates include the introduction of Mauga, a new Tank hero, as well as the availability of weapon skin customizations for Reinhardt, Reaper, and Mercy. Additionally, players now have the option to customize the Reticle’s Outline Color and adjust Outline Opacity to tailor their gaming experience.

The update extends to balance modifications, featuring buffs to Mauga and other Tanks. An exciting inclusion is the unveiling of a new PvPvE mode, Battle of the Beasts, adding a fresh dynamic to the gameplay. Players can also anticipate an upcoming Winter Wonderland event, adding seasonal festivities to the Overwatch 2 universe.

Despite these promising enhancements, players are encountering challenges. Social media reports indicate a surge in performance issues, particularly severe lag and FPS problems.

Players express their frustration, citing these issues as significantly detrimental to their overall gaming experience. Some go so far as to assert that the problems have ‘ruined’ the game for a considerable number of players.

While Blizzard has not issued an official statement on the matter, the acknowledgment of the problem, particularly with reports primarily coming from PS5 players, provides context to the situation. Players can reasonably anticipate the developers to address these concerns by releasing patches or updates, with the aim of mitigating reported problems and elevating the overall gameplay experience.

Although the support team has not offered specific comments or real-time updates regarding the issue, information from the official bug report section on the Blizzard website shows that the problem has been documented in the ‘current issues’ section.

This indicates that the development team is likely aware of the reported issue and is actively investigating it. It suggests that they might be in the process of examining the problem and could be preparing to release a patch or update soon to address and resolve the identified issues.

Overwatch 2 Season 8 was launched on Tuesday, December 5, bringing a unique Monster Hunter-inspired essence through its battle pass skins, the official introduction of the new tank hero Mauga, and the unveiling of an innovative game mode. Players were treated to an exclusive preview of Mauga’s abilities during a dedicated weekend in November. This season is poised to deliver an enhanced level of personalization with the introduction of all-new weapon skins.

The upcoming season is packed with content, including the much-anticipated return of seasonal events Winter Wonderland 2023 and Lunar New Year 2024. These limited-time events will reintroduce their respective game modes, such as Mei’s Snowball Offensive, Yeti Hunt, Capture the Flag, and Bounty Hunter Deathmatch. Particularly noteworthy is the reappearance of Overwatch 2’s take on Prop Hunt, now known as Mischief and Magic, set against the enchanting backdrop of Lijiang Night Market.

Before the revival of these limited-time game modes, Overwatch 2 players can look forward to something entirely fresh: The Battle of the Beasts. This inventive PvPvE mode will engage two teams of four players each in an intense clash against two massive Orisas. The Battle of the Beasts also provides an exciting opportunity for all Overwatch 2 players to explore Mauga’s capabilities at no cost, adding an extra layer of anticipation to the forthcoming season.
