The Development of Communication

Telephone

The telephone is a communication device that can be used by two users to relay a message verbally regardless of the location. The telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell in 1876 and was the first to be granted a patent in the US. Being one of the pioneer intelligent instruments in the 19th century with its clear replication of the human voice, the telephone was further developed and thus became a commodity not just at home but also in business and the government.

As time progressed, the telephone also developed in size, sound, and features. In the 1970’s most telephones have answering machines where people can leave a message to the machine which will be reviewed whenever the recipient is available. In the 1990’s majority of the phones are touch buttons and has special features which can store a caller’s ID number so if the recipient cannot answer it, they can return the call afterward. In the early 2000 digital phone service became a trend in Japan and South Korea. The majority of the household and offices used the Internet telephone and in 2005 a Newsweek article called the Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) “the next big thing”. It became a trend because the recipient can see the caller because it has a video attached to the device which is very convenient for both the caller and the user.

The Cellular Phone

The cellular phone is another telecommunication device wherein people can call another person anytime and anywhere as long as the device is turned on and the receiver is within the vicinity of the cell site. The cellular phone is independent of cable which is a single-user circuit like the regular landline which is used to send signals for the caller and the receiver to communicate.

Although cellular phones were considered the biggest innovation of all time in the ’90s especially when text messaging became available, some mobile games, cameras, Bluetooth, and mp3, the breakthrough of the Smartphone is still considered the most intelligent.

Android users can download applications in their play store while Apple users can download them in their Apple Application Store.
