Is the ultimate Flagship Smartphone OnePlus 12 a “Manufacturing Disaster”?

In the early months of the upcoming year, OnePlus is set to launch its latest flagship, the OnePlus 12, globally. However, just days after its introduction in China, users have shared images indicating potential manufacturing defects in their OnePlus 12 units. Despite offering a high-end flagship experience in many aspects, user reports suggest that certain units may encounter challenges in building quality and finishing.

Numerous Weibo users have highlighted visible gaps between the camera housing and the body of the OnePlus 12. Images circulating on the platform depict these gaps, sparking concerns about a potential quality control issue within a specific batch of devices. Some buyers have also observed a distinct separation between the curved rear glass shell and the metal frame.

This issue, seemingly associated with quality control for a particular batch, manifests as a gap between the camera module and the phone’s frame. In some cases, users have noticed a wedge between the curved rear glass shell and the metal frame, as initially reported by Android Authority.

While a gap in the frame typically suggests a swollen battery, this scenario seems unlikely given that the OnePlus 12 is a new phone. Another report on Weibo mentions excessive glue seeping out of the gap, reminiscent of a similar problem faced by owners of Samsung’s foldable phones, particularly the Galaxy Z Fold series.

Users are now questioning the justification of the OnePlus 12 being IP65 certified. If gaps are being reported between the camera housing and the back panel of the OnePlus 12, then it will affect water resistance abilities.

The full extent of these issues is not entirely clear at this point, but it seems that more users have experienced problems related to a gap in the camera housing rather than excess glue. Not all devices appear affected, as some users report that their OnePlus 12 units show no signs of these issues.

However, similar reports came when its predecessor OnePlus 11 was launched.

Historically, smartphone brands have promptly provided replacements in cases of similar defects in new devices. It would not be surprising to see OnePlus take similar action, especially considering the flagship status of the OnePlus 12 and the potential risks associated with pre-launch negative publicity.

It’s also somewhat surprising because OnePlus places a special emphasis on the design of its phones, a focus recently extensively discussed on the OnePlus Open platform. In terms of the OnePlus 12, it comes fully equipped. Priced at around $600, it features a vibrant 120Hz OLED screen, Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, a triple-camera setup with a periscope zoom lens, and supports 100W charging. The official teasers indicate that the phone is set to launch in the first quarter of 2024 globally.

However, we maintain optimism that this problem is not widespread, and we expect the company to address and resolve these issues before the global launch next month.
