It’s been a month since Xiaomi launched its first smartwatch offering, Mi Watch, in China. However, there is not yet any update that the smartwatch will hit the shores of India, the largest market of the Chinese OEM.
We are just wondering whether India ever going to see the launch of the Apple Watch look-alike that is made available at a lot cheaper price than the original Apple Watch? We do not have a definite answer yet on that. However, if we trace back the progress made by the company on their Watch business in India, we come across something that can’t be fully ignored.
We all know that Xiaomi subdivided its branding into two segments – Mi and Redmi. If we try to view the Xiaomi business in India from two sub-brands, we understand that the company has a significant presence in the smart bands category through its sports and fitness tracker offering Mi Band, successfully running since 2014 in the market.
In the last three months, Xiaomi has back-to-back launched two new devices in the Mi Band category– Mi Band 4 in September and a lot cheaper Mi Band 3i in late November (similar to Mi Band 3 but without a heart rate sensor on the back). Therefore, we think there is hardly any chance of Mi Watch making its way to India because that might lead to cannibalization of Mi Band market in India.
As far as the Redmi sub-brand is concerned, there is an official confirmation from the company that Xiaomi is working on a Redmi Watch that many conceive would resemble the Mi Watch design and specs. If that is really so, it doesn’t make any sense logically for Xiaomi to launch two smartwatch offerings bearing similar design and specs in India.
Since we can somehow rule out a smartwatch offering from the Mi sub-brand in India, there is a high possibility that Xiaomi might launch Redmi Watch in India in early 2020 as rumoured. So stay tuned to PhonesWiki for further updates.
