Samsung Note 10 S Pen’s new features explained

Since the inception of the Galaxy Note series, Samsung is working tirelessly and improving the S Pen in every aspect right from the start. The S-Pen is what makes the Note devices stand out from the rest of the competition.

If you are one of those people who wants a stylus with their device, the Note series is the only way to go. The S-Pen is something users have grown accustomed to from the past several years.

Nonetheless, the S-Pen is something which the Korean giant has been continuously innovating and adding new features to. The first iteration of the stylus allowed users to write on their screens opening up a vast array of options the company could make use of.

However, the S-Pen has been hindering the development of the Note series for a long time. People have argued over the fact that the S-Pen takes up a lot of the internal space which could be used for other features such as a bigger battery.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 10 is a completely different phone and the S Pen is now sprinkled now with some new features.

Brand new Air Gestures

While the first phone of the Note series allowed users to doodle on the screen, the latest version helps to easily perform several actions and gestures using the stylus itself. Just take out the S-Pen and it instantly kicks into action.

Basically, the S-Pen acts like a remote for the smartphone. You can scroll through pictures in the gallery, scroll articles on the internet and even change the music, all without even touching the screen.

Just holding down the button on the stylus, one can choose various camera modes. And in case you are wondering, yes, you can use the stylus as a remote for clicking photos. The company is now providing a Software Development Kit for various developers to make use of the S-Pen in ways only limited by imagination and creativity.

Doodle in Augmented Reality

Some phones are really underrated like LG’s V series. The Galaxy Note 10 is taking baby steps and trying to achieve what LG already has. The V series allows you to control the various microphones and even focus on people in the frame.

While Samsung hasn’t included something like it, the S-Pen allows you to add AR effects, all thanks to the powerful Snapdragon 855 chipset. All of this can be done in real-time in the video.

If you are wondering what AR doodle can do, just capture a video of a person. Samsung’s facial recognition algorithm kicks in and instantly identifies the feature of the persons face. You can add various effects such as a wig or a moustache.

All you need to do now is save it. Now that it is saved, whenever you record that person’s video, it will add the effects all while keeping track of their movements, just like Snapchat.

The brand new Video Editor

Samsung has introduced a new video editing app which is basically focused around the stylus. Just undock the S-Pen and you can easily rearrange your video timeline, navigate to a particular frame and even add text or images.

The video can be saved in various formats and even works the popular DeX mode while supporting HDR10+.

New design

Every new phone in the Note series brings some kind of improvement to the S-Pen. This year, the S-Pen feels light and more balanced than its earlier versions. Since it is directly housed inside of the phone, the S-Pen is smaller compared to the stylus on the Galaxy Tab. One notable advantage is that the chances of losing you S-Pen are minimal since anyone will easily notice the hole in the phone.

Handwriting to text

One of the most useful features of the S-Pen is its ability to convert handwritten notes into text. People who are fed up of typing and just want to jot down notes, the S-Pen is clearly the thing for you.

If you sometimes use the Note 10 for working on the go, the stylus is perfect for signing off documents or doodling ideas and stuff. One new unique feature is the capability to convert handwritten notes to a text file or a pdf.

New sensors

Yes, we saved the best for the last. This year S-Pen is now loaded with an accelerometer and a gyroscope. This will allow it to detect various motions in the air. And with Samsung now providing developers with a way to directly develop applications for the stylus, it won’t be far when you will be able to use the S-Pen to perform several customized actions.

With the gyroscope and the accelerometer, the S-Pen can easily be used as a remote control for various things such as playing games, performing various air gestures and even to perform some remote actions such as turning Bluetooth on or off just by flicking the S-Pen in a certain pattern.

With every new Note phone, Samsung is able to distinguish the lineup from the S series. A lot of the existing Note fanboys will surely upgrade to the Note 10. And with each year passing by, the competition in this space is falling behind, meaning Samsung is the only company which works really hard on offering a near-perfect Stylus device.
