Online leaker @_the_tech_guy recently tweeted that Xiaomi has a filed trademark application for the second generation of Poco, aka Pocophone globally. The tweet provided some snapshots of the application filing, mentioning the application date as December 04, 2019.
It’s been more than a year since the mid-ranged device Poco F1 was launched by Xiaomi. Hence, expectations are ripe about the next installment of the series. There is no official confirmation on the launch yet.
It is a bit hard to digest the fact that Xiaomi could file the trademark application for Poco F2 in China. There are two reasons for that. Firstly, Xiaomi never released the Poco brand in China. It was released only in India in August 2018 and thereafter globally (including China) as Pocophone F1. Secondly, a trademark application can never be global in nature. That means, if Xiaomi files for the Poco F2 trademark application in China, then it can never be used in India, where it is originally launched.
There were rumours that Xiaomi is rebranding Poco F1 as Mi Play in China that was launched during Christmas in 2018. However, when Mi Play came out it in China, it did not bear much resemblance to Poco F1.
At the same time, it is not very difficult to believe that Poco F2 might launch anytime soon. We have recently come across a design leak of the phone, provided unintentionally by the popular U.S. based manufacturer of smartphone cases, Spigen.
There were also speculations that Xiaomi might launch Poco F2 very soon based on the tendency of the company to release devices with the latest chipset at the end of the lifecycle to keep costs lower. There was a rumor that Poco F2 might get released with the latest Snapdragon 855 Plus chipset, released in July 2019.
