Apple, Apple, Apple… you continue to disappoint me. You make promises to reach for the sky, but it mostly reflects on your pricing strategies. First, problems with the iOS in sending messages. Then, weird discoloration and green tints on the screen which is believed to be fixed in a later update. And now, the aluminum body discolors far too soon. Here’s our take on the iPhone 12 discoloration issues.

What’s the iPhone 12 discoloration issue?

The problem seems to be restricted to the lower end of the iPhone 12 series, namely the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Mini. This is primarily attributed to the iPhone 12 and 12 mini’s aluminum borders. The iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max make use of stainless steel which seems to avoid the early discoloration of its smaller brethren.

It was initially spotted in Svetapple. The concerning ‘defect’ report claims that the device purchased in November 2020 has already had some discoloration near the camera. The reporters at Svetapple.sk mention that the device is only 4 months old and had cost a whopping price of €899.

This phone has been worn in a transparent case since day one and has not been used in any “toxic” environment where aggressive substances are present.

Nevertheless, an unpleasant cosmetic defect appeared on it, which from our point of view was caused by a bad / imperfect surface treatment. A deep red color began to fade in one of the corners, which did not look good visually.

The initial reports coming in highlight that it has affected aluminum phones of iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini. The stainless steel edges of iPhone 12 Pro series has not been affected.

What causes the iPhone 12 discoloration issue?

Some of the user forums believe that the issue is caused due to UV radiation and constant exposure to the sun. While this could be a probable cause, the reporters at Svetapple.sk denied them claiming that the device spent much of its life indoors.

Other reasons for the iPhone 12 discoloration issues could be the reaction of the phone case’s silicon plastic reacting with the paint of the phone. This seems probable because Apple doesn’t anodize device which come in colors other than gold, silver or dark bronze. The retention of the color on the surface becomes weaker, either rubbing off or peeling away.

What is Apple’s stand on the matter?

Apple has the logic that iPhone 12 uses “aerospace-grade aluminum edges.” Apple has refused to take up complaints citing it to be a cosmetic issue and cannot be covered under guarantee. The performance of the affected models iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini are nowhere impacted technically in terms of hardware and software. Hence. Apple does come across as iPhone 12 fading issue insensitive.

But it is not an iPhone 12 batch-related issue. The previous iPhone models such as the iPhone XR and the iPhone 11 faced similar screen discoloration. Much of the issues were reported specifically for red color. However, iPhone 11 paint coming off issue was noticed in green or black-colored units too. However, several members of the Apple forum attest it to everyday usage. Such claims aren’t excuses for Apple to fail in quality where devices below ₹15000 manage to succeed.

The iPhone 12 has been dogged with both hardware and software issues. In the majority of cases, Apple’s response has been to shut out their customers stating it to be a premium feature. It, however, adds to the number of nails in their coffin.
