Instagram is quick to take advantage of the ongoing situation and launched reels to fill the void left by TikTok. The feature allows users to create 15 second long videos like TikTok. The Facebook-owned company had started testing for the feature a few years back in selected countries.

Instagram has a good ration of videos and images both and Reels might prove to be beneficial. “Videos make up over a third of all posts in India,” said Ajit Mohan, the head of Facebook India, in a call with reporters Wednesday. They obviously denied that Reels launch had anything to do with the TikTok ban.

TikTok is a short video app that became popular worldwide, especially in India, in a short time. The app had around 200 million users in India and about 1 Billion users total around the world. It was targeting 300 million from India in 2020 before things took an ugly turn.

A report by The Indian Intelligence Agencies reported over 52 Chinese apps that are harmful to Indian users. Considering the report, a week ago, the Government of India banned 59 Chinese applications including TikTok. While TikTokers are not happy about the decision of the government, the majority of non-TikToker Indians are happy about the decision.

In the absence of TikTok, many Indian apps like ShareChat, Chingari, Roposo, among others have come forward to promote their app. However, Instagram already has a huge user based and a lot of influencers are active on the platform. Instagram had over 165 million users in India last month and it is growing rapidly.

Reels Features

Reels videos will appear on Instagram’s Explore tab, allowing users to reach a wider audience than their own following base. Users can also share Reels as Stories, though, in that case, the video will not appear in the Explore tab and will disappear after 24 hours.
