Instagram is on a feature removing spree since last year. In 2019, they removed the ‘Following’ section globally and like counter from selected parts of the US. Now they are dropping the IGTV button. Read on for details.
Instagram removed the IGTV button that was initially located on the top right corner beside the message button on the home screen of the app.
IGTV Button Removed From Instagram App
IGTV is Instagram’s answer to YouTube. Initially, IGTV was very popular and released as a separate app as well as a shortcut was provided inside the Instagram app. But now the shortcut button was removed as it was not being used by many people.
A Facebook representative, in a talk with TechCrunch, said, “As we’ve continued to work on making it easier for people to create and discover IGTV content, we’ve learned that most people are finding IGTV content through previews in Feed, the IGTV channel in Explore, creators’ profiles and the standalone app. Very few are clicking into the IGTV icon in the top right corner of the home screen in the Instagram app… We always aim to keep Instagram as simple as possible, so we’re removing this icon based on these learnings and feedback from our community.”
One must note that IGTV isn’t going away entirely. You can still find links to IGTV videos on user profiles, specific videos, and the Explore tab. But that button in the top right corner when you open the app is now gone.
When IGTV was launched in 2018, there was a chance that it could have competed well with YouTube, but it seems Instagram didn’t implement it that well.
Instagram’s New Rival TikTok
Now, besides YouTube and Snapchat, Instagram and Facebook have another rival to worry about – TikTok. The app recently became the second most downloaded app in 2019, beating Facebook.
Snapchat’s CEO Evan Spiegel recently said that TikTok can beat Instagram in terms of popularity.
