Recently, ZEE5, one of the most popular streaming platform in India, has made a deal with the UK-based NENT Studios. As a result of this deal, producer, Big Synergy Media Ltd. will be working on the Indian version of “Black Widows.” The web series will have a total of 24 episodes spread over two seasons. Black Widows is based on a Finnish drama of the same name.
Roope Lehtinen and Mikko Polla were the ones who created the original Finnish version of Black Widows. Finnish broadcaster, Nelonene aired the series that went on to win 3 Finnish Venla Awards in 2014, along with an International Gold Panda Award in the category of best TV drama.
Black Widows is a story of three close friends who try to murder their husbands. They manage to do so, but only partially, as one of the men survives and is now looking for revenge. The trust between these friends is pushed to the limits as their lives become a lot tougher than it used to be. The series explores the women’s experience as they overcome barriers to keep themselves alive.
In an interview, the CEO of ZEE5 India, Tarun Katial mentioned, “Zee5 has seen exponential growth since launching on the back of great content and technology. With over 100 Original web series and films across genres and languages, our aim is to continue to offer consumers content that is real, and relatable. Black Widows is an engaging story featuring strong female protagonists, with plenty of suspense and a large dose of dark comedy. We saw a great potential and appeal for Indian audiences and found credible partners in NENT Studios UK and Big Synergy Media Ltd. I am sure it will be hugely popular, binge-worthy when it launched later this year.”
The Indian version of Black Widow would be the eighth time that the series is getting a remake. Till now, Ukrainian, Estonian, Middle Eastern, Lithuanian, Mexican, Scandinavian, and Chech versions of the series have been made. The Indian version will come to ZEE5 by the end of 2020.
