Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has launched a Channel Selector App. It will aid the subscriber of DTH(direct-to-home) and/or Cable services to view his plan. TRAI has facilitated the subscriber to opt for channels of interest and ultimately optimize the channel packs on TV or web portals or supporting applications. This app is designed for all consumers irrespective of the Distributed Platform Operators (DPO).
Since the implementation of the last set of changes in the tariff, TRAI noticed consumers were facing difficulty in optimizing the channels and the expenses as per their choice. To ease the process TRAI launched Channel Selector App yesterday.
“We have to realize that things become easier when they are standardized and transparent. Our objective is to facilitate the consumer which in turn, will be in the long-term interest of all stakeholders,” said RS Sharma, TRAI Chairman
The Channel Selector App is available on Android and iOS via Google Play & App Store. The app is functional with four DTH operators namely Tata Sky, Dish TV, d2h, and Airtel TV. For the cable operators or MSOs (multiple system operators), the app works with 4 names that constitute around 50% of the TV subscriber base. They include Hathway, SITI Networks, In Digital, and Asianet. TRAI is working on to bring the 12 more cable operators also on its app platform.
How to use TRAI Channel Selector App?
Time needed: 10 minutes.
1. Download TRAI Channel Selector App
- Search the DTH/Cable Operator
- Select DTH or cable operator from the list shown for the process of authentication
On selecting the operator, enter the details asked such as registered mobile number OR subscriber ID OR set-top box number. If a registered mobile number is added, OTP will be generated on the RMN. For consumers who have opted for STB details, subscribers will get OTP on his/her TV screen.
- View/Modify/Save the account subscription details
After authentication, make the necessary alterations by choosing the desired ones and removing the unwanted channels. Save the subscription plan/bouquet of channels selected. The real-time status of the subscription request can also be checked by logging again.
For the missing operators in the list, a message is flashed to the user “Some DTH/Cable operators who are yet to onboard are not available. As soon as these DTH/Cable operators are ready to integrate with the app, they shall be available.“
TRAI Channel Selector App with the help of APIs fetches the existing subscription details from the respective DPOs platform. It is expected that the app will give an alternative for “optimum configuration i.e. combination of Channels/Bouquet based on consumer’s selection so as to reduce the total monthly bill. In addition, will suggest combination of Channels/Bouquet based on consumer’s interest keeping in view geographical, regional, language, genres, etc. preferences.“
