Apple Might Launch Two New iPhone SE Models in 2020

It seems that Apple might be keen on making the fill-up of the numeric gap in iPhone launches more meaningful. The U.S. tech giant skipped an iPhone 9 and straightway launched iPhone X in late-2017 after iPhone 8 to mark its 10th anniversary. The Latest leaks suggest that the company might launch two new affordable iPhone models in 2020, which will be technically iPhone SE 2 and iPhone SE 2 Plus but could be labeled as iPhone 9 and iPhone 9 Plus.

Recent reports by Taiwanese newspaper DigiTimes suggest that Apple has ordered two different LCD displays from Taiwanese firm Chipbond Technology. As per previous reports, iPhone SE 2 is expected to bear a lot of resemblance with the design of the iPhone 8 that had a 4.7-inch display. It is suspected that another LCD screen might be bigger than that of size 5.5 to 6.1 inches and might be meant for a bigger iPhone SE 2 Plus.

If this becomes true, there be a total of six iPhone launches in 2020 instead of the previous rumor of five iPhone launches. Among them, there would be two affordable iPhone models – iPhone SE 2 and iPhone SE 2 plus aka iPhone 9 and iPhone 9 Plus (similar to iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus). The other four phones would be the four variants of the flagship iPhone 12 – iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Max, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max, as previously believed.

As per previous leaks made by Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, iPhone SE 2 is expected to be released at the end of March this year. On the other hand, the latest leaks by DigiTimes suggest that iPhone SE 2 Plus might be released at the end of 2020 or early 2021. However, Apple launched both the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus at the same time in 2017. Therefore, we are not sure whether there would be really any time gap between the release of iPhone SE 2 and iPhone SE 2 Plus.

Specs-wise, iPhone SE 2 is rumored to bear resemblance with iPhone 11, such as 64-bit A13 ARM-based chip. The other reason for iPhone SE 2 to bear the specs of iPhone 11 is that the upcoming phone is expected to be compatible with Apple AR (Augmented Reality) Glasses that are rumored to be launched in early 2020, as per the Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Being a low-priced model, iPhone SE 2 is also expected to have an only one-camera module, Touch ID, and onboard storage of 64GB and 128GB.

Some reports also claim that there would be another affordable iPhone model, iPhone SE 3, based on the design of the iPhone 11, and it will feature a single-lens rear camera. However, we are yet to find the authenticity of that rumor.

Coming to the flagship iPhone 12, they are expected to flaunt a full-screen design, under-display fingerprint scanner based on the technology recently unveiled by Qualcomm, and a long-range 3D camera. Previous leaks suggested that iPhone 12 camera is expected to be more advanced with the ability to take clear photos in fog and misty conditions taking the help of the technology adopted from image processing company Spectral Edge, acquired by Apple in 2019. iPhone 12 is expected to launch at the end of 2020.
