OnePlus had released the Android 10 beta program (OxygenOS 10) officially for the OnePlus 5 and 5T devices in May 2020. Launched in 2017, they got upgraded to Android 10, the third Android upgrade for the OnePlus models. However, the build released in China and globally turned out to be buggy. It rendered the smartphone almost 50% useless either due to the crashing of apps or not working at all.

OnePlus has established its name over the past few years for the quality it delivers. Though priced on higher side, the brand has become popular due to its consumer-oriented focus. Users expect that the brand should listen to them and keep the new updates bug free.

However, OnePlus 5 and 5T users have a different story to tell. Since the Android 10 update, their device has become infected. OnePlus 5/5T marked a debut in 2017. At the time of launch, they ran on Android 7.1.1 Nougat out of the box. Currently, they are running Android 10 for global users. OnePlus’ OxygenOS 10/ HydrogenOS 10 has been updated on Chinese variants.

The common set of problems reported by the OnePlus 5 and 5T users included the below. Maybe you can also correlate and even add on top of them

  • Issues with opening up of Play Store
  • File manager and Gallery appear to be emptied though they are not
  • All Google apps are crashing out
  • UPI apps not working
  • Performance severely impacted
  • On charging, heats up
  • Battery Drain faster
  • Frequent crash of the Settings app
  • Computer unable to detect the phone when connected
  • VoLTE and VoWiFi, Google Messages, Alarm, Mic, Phone Dialer, Phone Recording not working
  • Issues with receipt of SMS

Though there has been workaround to a few of them, but for a technically-challenged person, it is difficult. People had started getting restless to hear an official update on the stable rollout of Android 10. It has been 4 months since the release of beta builds but OnePlus had not acknowledged the issues and progress.

Yesterday, OnePlus recognized the OnePlus 5 & 5T update delay on its community forum. While accepting users desperately waiting for a stable build to address all the messy issues, Gary C. (OxygenOS Product Lead) said

When we tested this version internally, we found a serious bug related to the communication module. The team evaluates this issue can seriously affect the user experience. Moreover, this issue required a lot back and forth with communication carrier to solve the problems collaboratively, considerably delaying the release. In turn, this made it impossible to release the next stable OnePlus 5 and 5T version on time.

The team accepted their fault that they could not give a clear timeline due to the nature of the critical issues. He also went and confirmed that the team still doesn’t have any date, however, the progress will be communicated in the coming days

We will continue to do our best to solve the bug ASAP and also share the progress with you once we have an update on the release plan.

On the other hand, there is an unofficial report that the OnePlus 5T Chinese variant has started receiving a stable H2OS update. The initial reaction has been satisfactory with a majority of the issues addressed.

The Chinese update’s changelog reads:

System
• Fix the problem of weak GPS positioning signal
• Fixed the problem of no sound in certain videos on Youku
• Fix the problem that the alarm does not ring when the device is off
• Fix the problem that fingerprint recognition cannot be used under certain circumstances
• Update Android security patch to 2020.06

Wallet
• Added Wallet App, integrated bus/access card entrance into Wallet App, making operation more convenient
• Added WeChat payment method for bus card recharge

Camera
• Electronic anti-shake function has been added to bring you a more stable shooting experience

I believe with today’s announcement, there is a solace in the fact that team is looking into the issues of OnePlus 5 and 5T. Although no date is in sight, it is only a matter of time. Do share with us what you think and expect in the coming days!
